Marvel Studios is known to film extensively in the Georgia area, but later this year the comic movie powerhouse is taking their production on the road, with plans to film in Washington. This came to light when DC Mayor Muriel Bowser’s team held a press conference yesterday dubbed “Ninth Annual March Madness.” At 21:40 in the video, LaToya Foster, director of DC’s OCTFME, discussed what people could expect to film in the district, which included news of Marvel filming in DC.

Foster said:

“And I know you all will be excited about this. We have Marvel coming to Washington, DC. I can’t give you too much about that, but let me tell you, we’re going to have a huge Marvel film taking place right in downtown that you won’t want to miss out on.”

Interestingly, the presentation had a slide similar in purpose to the kind Kevin Feige uses at Marvel timeline presentations. That slide included a slot for filming for a Marvel Studios Feature Film in June.

Rumors have trickled throughout the DC area for the past year that something big was coming, and a Marvel feature certainly fits that bill. The mayor’s representative didn’t give any more details about the project, but based on the timing and the location, we have a strong guess.

Captain America: New World Order and Washington, DC

Based on what we know about Marvel’s filming schedule, our best guess is that the June project in Washington, DC is most likely Captain America-related.

And there’s precedence, too. Washington and Captain America have a history. One of the most famous lines from the previous Captain America movies, which was even called back to in Endgame, was “On your left.” The line was so iconic that cheers erupted for it in theaters showing that final installment of the Infinity Saga. The phrase was a nod to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, where Cap passed Falcon a.k.a. Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson as they did laps around the reflecting pool on the National Mall.

The fourth Captain America movie is preparing filming in Georgia later this month. And information about the movie has been mostly kept under wraps, although we’ve encountered several casting notices for dignitaries and military types in the Peach state. If the Marvel feature filming in DC in June is Captain America, it certainly brings to mind exciting possibilities.

Notable, Kevin Feige himself confirmed that Harrison Ford would play President Thaddeus Ford in the movie. DC is the president’s stomping grounds, so that makes sense.

“There’s a dynamic between President Ross and Sam Wilson. They have a history together, but in this film, we’ll be seeing the dynamic between Captain America and the president of the United States in a way that is just incredible.” – Kevin Feige (via Entertainment Weekly on 2/14/2023)

One of the most significant advantages to filming in DC, besides the fantastic film rebates that the district is apparently rolling out for the production, is being able to take advantage of the gorgeous monuments for exterior shots. Downtown DC is home to, among other things, the Washington Monument (hey, Spidey!), the Lincoln Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, the White House, and the Capitol.

How will we know what’s filming in Washington, DC?

We’ve reported before about the extreme secrecy that Marvel is known for regarding their productions. If Captain America: New World Order films in DC in June, it will likely be under a working title. Last year we reported the fourth film in the Captain America franchise was using the production company Changeup Productions LLC. And we also reported that one of the working titles the production is using is “Rochelle, Rochelle.” Marvel may use that again when they film in June, or they may pick another one.

There are other possibilities if the Marvel feature filming in DC isn’t Captain America: New World OrderThunderbolts will reportedly begin production around the same time. The US government assembles the Thunderbolts, so DC as a gathering spot for them makes sense. We’ll have to wait and see to see what’s filming for sure.
