In Marvel comics, there are two main groups called the Guardians of the Galaxy. The original team was created in 1969. They’re from the 31st century and they mostly stayed in their own bubble separate from the Marvel universe. The modern team was brought together in 2006, and this is the team that inspired Marvel Studios’ movie trilogy featuring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, and Dave Bautista!

In the reading guide below, the “Classic Guardians” and “Before Guardians: Infinity Watch” sections are mainly for completionists and background reading. You can skip these. These early comics showcase the adventures of the original team and set up the history of the modern characters before they came together. While they’re great stories and useful info, they’re mostly background reading for the modern team. If you want to jump right into the action, start with the “Annihilation Wars” section!

Classic Guardians of the Galaxy (The Ravagers)

The original Guardians of the Galaxy comics were completely different from the team we know today. This first iteration of the group introduced Yondu and inspired the Ravagers team in the Marvel Studios films (played by Michael Rooker, Sylvester Stallone, and Michael Rosenbaum).

In the comics, these old-school Guardians are known for the epic “Korvac Saga” with the Avengers and their own Guardians of the Galaxy series which lasted for a hefty 62 issues! Most of these classic stories are collected in Guardians of the Galaxy: Tomorrow’s Heroes Omnibus and the Guardians of the Galaxy Classic Omnibus.

Meanwhile, the modern Guardians team was beginning to be introduced individually. This era gave us classic comics individually introducing Star-Lord, Groot, Rocket, Drax, and Mantis, plus Kraglin’s incredibly bizarre first appearance! Most of these issues can be found in the Guardians of the Galaxy Solo Classic Omnibus, so grab it if you can!

Before Guardians: Infinity Watch (1990s)

In the 90s, the original Guardians were busy in their own corner of the Marvel universe. However, Marvel’s cosmic comics began setting up the future with Jim Starlin’s Infinity Trilogy. These comics laid the foundation for Marvel’s cosmic comics and the MCU’s Infinity Saga. Featuring Gamora, Drax, and Adam Warlock, the group called the Infinity Watch also resembles an early version of the lineup we’d come to love from the modern Guardians of the Galaxy comics and movies.

This section overlaps with our Adam Warlock reading guide, so check that page for extra Infinity War tie-ins!

Guardians of the Galaxy: Annihilation Wars (2000s)

Beginning the modern era of Guardians of the Galaxy comics is a multi-step process! First Drax the Destroyer (2005) rebooted its titular character, along with cosmic Marvel iself! This leads directly into Annihilation and Annhilation: Conquest by Keith Giffen, and the fantastic Guardians of the Galaxy and Thanos Imperative by Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning.

It sounds like a lot of work, but it’s actually a lot of fun! This comics saga was the basic inspiration for James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy films, so it’s the easiest place to start for fans of the MCU and these some of the best stories the best Guardians have ever had. Plus it features Adam Warlock and High Evolutionary, so it’s definitely relevant reading for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Check out their reading guides to see this era from their points of view!

Guardians of the Galaxy (2013)

In 2013, Brian Michael Bendis relaunched the series, loosely inspired by 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy movie. While his run is often criticized for ignoring the continuity of the previous comics, Bendis’ series is easier for new readers and frequently crossed over with his great All-New X-Men series featuring Magik!

All-New Guardians of the Galaxy & Infinity Wars (2017)

Following Bendis, fan-favorite writer Gerry Duggan took over the series in time for the second Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Often considered some of the best Guardians of the Galaxy comics since Abnett & Lanning, this is not a run to miss!

Duggan continued his work into Infinity Countdown and Infinity Wars, which also brought back Adam Warlock! The series led to a new series of Guardians of the Galaxy comics in 2019, written by Donny Cates.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2020)

In recent years, Al Ewing took over the title for a fantastic run that explored the history of Star-Lord going all the way back to his first appearance in 1975’s Marvel Preview #4. Ewing’s team also featured Hulkling, Wiccan, and Noh-Varr, so check out the Young Avengers reading guide for more of their adventures!

In the wake of the Guardians’ new popularity, Marvel has also started releasing novels inspired by the comics and the MCU! Our own Luna Gauthier has reviewed Thanos: Titans Consumed and Gamora & Nebula: Sisters in Arms. She especially lauds Thanos: Titans Consumed as “perfect for a summer read by the pool,” rating it 9/10 for its psychological exploration of how Thanos’ childhood led to the villain we know today.

While Marvel hasn’t published many new Guardians comics since Ewing’s run ended in 2021, the team is finally getting a new series this April, just in time for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3!
