‘Ant-Man’ 3 Writer Teases ‘Jurassic Park’ & Ninja Turtles, Adventure Vibes

Production on Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is deep underway, though many elements of the story are still being kept secret. Just last week we saw our first set photo of part of a ship , which seems likely to be used for traveling through the Quantum Realm. Earlier this summer, a script tease by Evangeline Lilly revealed that the film would be “a big, wild ride… about family, heart, warmth.” Additionally, Vanity Fair journalist Joanna Robinson confirmed that Corey Stoll would appear in some form as Darren Cross / Yellowjacket, reprising the role from the first film where he ends up lost in the Quantum Realm. This makes Stoll the second villain confirmed for the film after Jonathan Majors was cast as Kang the Conqueror in 2020. The first taste of Majors as the multi-movie antagonist came only a few weeks ago in a surprise appearance at the end of Loki. Though we don’t know much about how Majors will factor into Ant-Man 3, we do know the film will feature a new writer, Jeff Loveness, who rose to prominence writing for Jimmy Kimmel Live! and various Marvel comics.

A new discovery may yield the most information about the story direction so far. When doing some investigation recently, I found an Instagram interview Loveness did with Vulture in December which no sites seem to have reported on. In the interview, Loveness talks about his inspirations and goals for Ant-Man 3, as well as the freedom Marvel gave him.

According to Loveness, Marvel used the COVID lockdown to re-envision Ant-Man 3, hoping to do something “new and weird”. Loveness compared his goals for the film to feel like “Crook or Jurassic Park, like a 1995 VHS you just pulled out of the box” saying that he wanted the movie to come with “an ant in a full Ninja Turtles costume”.

To emphasize the risks they’re taking with the film, Loveness emphasized that Ant-Man 3 would be just one installment in the larger series of Marvel projects, saying “[I] get to make a cheeseburger, a really good cheeseburger [I] hope people like. And if they don’t, it’s okay, it’s just a cheeseburger. You’ll have another.” As obscure as that is, the fun and unique tone is impossible to deny! At the very least, Loveness used the interview to give the most concrete description for the film so far, calling Ant-Man 3:

“something you can watch with your middle school friends. It drops a few references and makes you feel like you’re on an adventure.”

Putting everything together, I think this means we might see the Ant-Man team going on a retro-style Jurassic Park-esque adventure through the Quantum Realm with Ninja Turtles vibes, which frankly just sounds like an amazing fun ride.

Are you excited to get such a different take on the Ant-Man movies, or do you wish we were getting more of the style of Ant-Man and Ant-Man and the Wasp? What do you think Loveness’ comments mean? Let us know your thoughts on our social media!

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is being directed by Peyton Reed and written by Jeff Loveness. The film stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, Kathryn Newton, and Jonathan Majors and will release in theaters on February 17, 2023.
